Without delay, Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo needs to upgrade the Osubi-Warri Airstrip, Delta state.

The new minister must move in to see to urgent expansion of the airstrip’s RUNWAYS to international standard. The Osubi Airstrip that was constructed by Shell (SPDC) is overdue for expansion to accommodate bigger aircrafts for landing and taking off.

This responsibility is directly under the Aviation Ministry with Keyamo now fully in charge. Fela Kuti in one of his famous songs said, “Time wait for nobody”.

Keyamo should take the Osubi Airstrip upgrade and expansion of RUNWAYS as a priority project. Though appointed to serve the entire nation, the fact remains that Osubi upgrade is economically viable hence Shell built it to support the people and the nation at large.

Airports are one of the most viable infrastructure in Nigeria and other countries in the world. It provides strategic services to oil companies and who-is-who doing business in Nigeria.

Airports are booming infrastructural business across the world, critical reaources in any economy of the world, including developing and advanced countries. Development is not mere wishful thinking. I am calling on the new minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo to kick-start the upgrade and expansion of the TARMAC of the Osubi Airstrip without delay.

And I think Tinubu will approve the expansion of Osubi Airstrip’s RUNWAYS for him. Keyamo will be remembered for making it happen. I have been on this advocacy since 1999 when then President Olusegun Obasanjo declared it open in his first official visit to Delta state.

The Osubi Airstrip is one of the busiest in the country but lacks bigger RUNWAYS for bigger aircrafts to land and take off.

Within first six months of opening of Osubi Airstrip, it was among the best in the country in traffic flow and one of the highest in Nigeria.

On opening of Osubi airstrip, about 1,000 passengers passed through just as it handled 3,500 aircraft movements due to the increase in air traffic when Shell (SPDC) was operating and managing the Airstrip till the company divested and the maintenance and facilities were compliant internationally.
