The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has initiated a flood sensitization campaign in Imo State aimed at mitigating the impact of potential flood disasters.
Dr. Kylian Uchegbu, the Imo State representative on the NDDC Board, inaugurated the campaign in Owerri, the state capital, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. He highlighted the importance of this awareness initiative in reducing the effects of flooding, which has caused significant damage in Imo State and surrounding areas over the years. He urged residents of flood-prone regions to remain vigilant and prepared.
Mrs. Chinyere Umeh, a director in the Commission’s Directorate of Community and Rural Development, emphasized, “Flooding is a major concern, which is why our MD/CEO, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has tasked us with sensitizing the region’s residents and implementing measures to mitigate the effects.” She expressed optimism that this crucial awareness campaign would help save lives and protect properties in vulnerable communities.
Mr. Chidi Ogundu, representing the National Emergency Management Agency @nemanigeria at the event, noted that heavy rains and storms, exacerbated by global warming, are overwhelming the already strained drainage systems. He stressed that “prevention, mitigation, and preparedness are essential for effective response, recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.”
