NDDC Donates Communication Equipment to Rivers Police, Reinforces Partnership in Crime Fighting
Port Harcourt, Rivers State – December 18, 2024 – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated a range of advanced communication equipment to the Rivers State Police Command to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the police in maintaining law and order in the state. The donation, which includes radio transmitters, walkie-talkies, masts, and other related gadgets, was made on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Police Headquarters on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The NDDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Samuel Ogbuku, who led the commissioning of the equipment, emphasized that the gesture was a testament to the enduring partnership between the commission and the security agencies in the Niger Delta region. He explained that the NDDC, as an interventionist agency, was committed to supporting the police to ensure lasting peace and security, especially as the end of the year often witnesses an uptick in criminal activities.
“This donation demonstrates our unwavering support for the security agencies in the region,” Ogbuku stated during the commissioning. “As we approach the end of the year, we know that criminal elements try to take advantage of the period, and we want to ensure that our police are well-equipped to tackle these challenges. Communication is vital in ensuring security, and we are confident that these tools will enhance your performance.”
Ogbuku further revealed plans to expand the initiative by replicating the donation across other state commands in the Niger Delta region, ensuring that all police units are adequately linked. He also hinted at the possibility of contributing to the creation of safe city centers equipped with CCTV systems for improved monitoring.
“We will continue to improve mobility for the police, and we will not stop in our efforts to make sure that the security forces in the region have all they need to carry out their duties effectively,” Ogbuku added. “This partnership is a direct result of the vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who has worked closely with the NDDC to ensure better policing in the Niger Delta.”
The NDDC MD also expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, CP Mustapha Bala, for their collaboration in realizing the donation.
Speaking on behalf of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Bala, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Samuel Erale noted that the initiative had been in the works for some time and was a direct result of the efforts of the immediate past Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu. He acknowledged the valuable support from NDDC, which included the construction of quarters for senior police officers, provision of patrol vans, and vehicles for police personnel.
“With this new communication equipment, we can assure the residents of Rivers State that we are more than ready to respond to any emergency,” DCP Erale said. “The equipment provides us with up to 80 percent coverage in communication across the state, which is a significant leap forward in our operations.”
Former Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, also praised the NDDC for its timely intervention. He highlighted the importance of effective communication in modern policing, stressing that the newly donated tools would greatly aid police officers in the field.
“We have officers who are dedicated to their work, and with these new communication tools, we are better equipped to serve the people of Rivers State,” CP Disu remarked.
The ceremony was attended by a number of dignitaries, including top executives of the NDDC, traditional rulers, and members of the Rivers Police Command management. The collaboration between the NDDC and the police in Rivers State is seen as a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to reduce crime and ensure a safer environment for the residents of the state.
