The Fifth Edition of the Lagos Kids Mini Marathon was held on Saturday with the aim of promoting sports development through a School-based Competition.
The Chairperson of Lagos Kids Mini Marathon, Enitan Rewane, said the event with the theme, “Active Kids Rock” and an initiative of St Saviour’s School Ikoyi Endowment Fund, was organised by Road Warriors Running Club in collaboration with Banana Island Residents Association and supported by the Lagos State Sports Commission.
He stated that it is Nigeria’s first and only kids-focused Mini Marathon designed to encourage and inspire children between the ages of Five to 15 to embrace a healthy lifestyle.
According to him, over 1000 children from different schools across the state participated in the Mini Marathon which was divided into three categories: 1.2 Kilometres for 5-8 years, 3 Kilometres for 9-12 years and 5Kilometres for 13-15 years as well as the 1Kilometres Walkathon for younger kids along with their parents.
While noting that children from diverse backgrounds participated in the race and had fun competing with their contemporaries, Rewane lauded the support of stakeholders toward the success of the event, assuring that the race will be bigger and better next year with more kids participating.
Representative of the Director-General of the Commission and Deputy Director, Schools Sports (LSSC), Oluyomi Oluwasanmi commended organisers of the Mini Marathon for giving indigent kids the opportunity to take part in the race, stating that participants drawn from public schools in some of the education districts were supported by the commission to experience the event.
Winners in all three categories were presented with trophies and cash rewards while all participants received medals for participating in the mini-marathon.
