Chelsea’ Request To Postpone Today’s Game Dismissed

Chelsea’ match against Wolves this afternoon will go ahead despite a Covid-19 outbreak in the Blues’ camp after the Premier League rejected their request to postpone the fixture.

The Blues travel to Molineux this afternoon as they aim to keep pace with Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the league table.

But after a string of positive Covid-19 cases within the camp, the club hoped to get the game called off.

Four Chelsea players have been diagnosed with the virus this week, and given the multitude of stars who are already out with injuries or struggling for fitness, Thomas Tuchel’s side are concerned about player safety should the game proceed.

Despite their concerns though, the Premier League informed them this morning that the fixture won’t be rescheduled.

Five of the six top-flight matches due to take place on Saturday were called off due to Covid-19 outbreaks, with Arsenal clash with Leeds United the only game to survive.

The country is in the midst of health crisis with the Omicron variant of coronavirus spreading rapidly over the last few weeks.

There have been calls to pause football entirely for the safety of both players and fans, though critics say the havoc this would wreak to an already hectic calendar will arguably be more trouble than it’s worth – particularly with a mid-season World Cup less than a year away.

Chelsea head into today’s tie in unconvincing form, with just two wins in their last six matches.

The slump has cost them top spot in the Premier League, and cost them a first place finish in their Champions League group – though after drawing Lille in the last 16 they probably won’t be too fussed about the latter.

The European Champions have been without a recognised striker for almost two months, with both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner only recently recovering from spells on the treatment, before immediately testing positive for Covid-19. Sod’s Law.

Tuchel is in the eye of his very first storm as Chelsea boss, and the race is now on to see if he can weather it.
