Agbarha-Otor in Ughelli North near Ughelli central city had headquartered previous army battalions, including Army battalion 222, until recently when Governor Ifeanyi Okowa moved it to Agbor in Ika South as 181 Amphibious Battalion, Delta state.
Agbarha-Otor has been the ideal operational headquarters, being close to sensitive oil and gas facilities tied to the Ughelli Pump Station (UPS) also known as Ughelli Quality Control Centre (UQCC), where all crude oil/condensate are stored before pumping to Forcados Terminal for exports and to the refineries.
It was also close to the Ughelli East Gas Plant, Ughelli West Flow station, and the popular Utorogu Gas Plant Phases 1,2 and ongoing Utorogu Gas Plant Phase 3 projects. Again Agbarha-Otor is also near Ughelli Power Stations 1, 2, 3 & 4, also known as Delta Power Stations.
It is quite difficult to understand what the 181 Amphibious Battalion will be guarding in Agbor town, Ika South LGA instead of remaining in Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli Area to safeguard critical oil, gas, and power assets relevant to the nation.
Why play politics with everything? We are calling on President Mohammadu Buhari, the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Minister of Defense, and the Chief of Army Staff to urgently relocate the headquarters of the 181 Amphibious Battalion to Agbarha-Otor town in Ughelli Area where it was strategically located.
Why should Okowa play politics to such an extreme as compromising security in the state? Originally located in Agbarha-Otor, for strategic security purposes, that Army Battalion specifically now had few soldiers left in Agbarha-Otor base, making it difficult to respond to distress calls from Agbor in Ika South.
The army battalion was established in Agbarha-Otor in Ughelli specifically for guarding sensitive oil, gas, and power stations and not to protect individual estates of politicians and home towns.
