When in office, public officeholders keep forgetting power is transient, too temporary for anyone to be dead drunk on power.
Just six months ago, conceited, Godwin Emefiele was a name to reckon with among the who-is-who in Nigeria government and business circles, even beyond the nation’s borders.
All of that super influence has left him to face the reality that Elder E.K. Clark titled in his newly launched autobiography as ‘BRUTALLY FRANK’.
The reality of live after public office is real, hence I advise every public officeholder be you in the executive in governance, legislature, judiciary, corporate, military, police, DSS, Customs, EFCC, ICPC, business to be mindful of tomorrow.
Emefiele is facing the music alone that his past influences, power over the banking industry have all left him to weep alone. Those keeping Emefiele in custody are not exempted as well because they won’t remain in power for life.
Emefiele today is being prevented from making calls by those holding him in custody. I don’t pity him for facing reality of life like a common criminal? No. The prisons and cells are meant for human beings, not for animals.
Today, it is Emefiele’s turn and tomorrow will be another person’s turn. Office ‘might and power’ in whatever category are mere illusion and wishful thinking.
Two former military heads of state and two terms presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Mohammadu Buhari were once prisoners like common criminals and such is life.
I express this concern to warn those bragging about their power and ‘executive might’ at different stages of life. Those who think they use their status in office and society to punish others are day dreamers like drunken sailors who are the champions of the sea vessels.
Those who think they will be protected all through their lifetimes because of ‘might and power’ of past are deceiving selves, like Emefiele.
