The Lagos State Government has urged residents to socialise responsibly during the festive season to prevent accidents and fatalities at events.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, made the appeal in a statement on Sunday, adding that the commission’s safety guideline stipulated that event organisers should register events above 250 guests with the LSC.

Mojola said, “Residents and visitors coming into Lagos need to socialise responsibly over the festive season. This will prevent accidents, injuries and fatalities as the Yuletide season is characterised by lots of parties and events.

“Fun seekers are advised to be aware of emergency exits and muster points and they should move around and leave as a group when attending large events or concerts. Where alcohol is consumed, it should be done in moderation as this lowers mental alertness and coordination, therefore drink responsibly and guard against spiking of drinks.

“Overcrowded spaces should be avoided and reported immediately to the authorities. This is to guard against a stampede should the risk crystalise.”

Mojola also advised residents to report all incidents, noting that the state government could use its discretion to restrict, modify, postpone or cancel an event after a thorough risk assessment and submission of relevant safety documentation.
