President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Rebisi Kingdom Kris Ugo said the gesture is part of the clubs activity to commemorate the World Hepatitis Day every July 28th.

He said: “Hepatitis has killed more people than COVID-19. The government relies on Rotary as well in polio eradication. We were part of the structure that eradicated it and can be replicated in other sectors. This is an avenue to reach out to people for humanitarian services. We found that apart from other killer diseases like polio, hepatitis is a silent killer. We have seen the need to go out there to save lives, especially with the free vaccines, this will gradually eradicate the killer disease.”

On his part, the zonal Coordinator of the Viral Hepatitis Association of Nigeria Samson Emerole said ignorance and lack of interest about the silent killer viral disease are make major causes of more deaths as a result of the disease.

He said, “People still don’t care about the viral killer disease, they are still ignorant and don’t want to go and get tested. You will be shocked that people still think Hepatitis is about Hypertension. And it’s really sad that people still believe that any disease they don’t have knowledge about won’t kill them. So they don’t take getting tested and vaccinated serious.”

The zonal Coordinator of the Viral Hepatitis Association of Nigeria Samson Emerole said as part of activities to commemorate the world Hepatitis Day in Port Harcourt, a sensitization, screening and vaccination will be carried out today at its office premises at number four isiokpo street D/Line and the fruit garden market Kaduna Street in the morning.

He called on residents in the neighborhood to use the opportunity and get tested and vaccinated.
