Former French international Zinedine Zidane says he cannot coach Manchester United because he cannot speak English fluently.

Zidane disclosed this in an interview with L’Equipe, marking his 50th birthday on Thursday.

“As a manager, there are not fifty clubs I can go to. There are two or three possibilities. If I go back to a club it is to win. I say that in all modesty. That’s why I can’t go anywhere,” Zidane said.

Asked specifically if he wants “to go to Manchester,” Zidane explained that “I understand English, but I’m not completely fluent in it. I know that there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work in a different way. Many elements come into play to win, it’s a global context. I know what I need to win.”

Last November, there were reports linking the Frenchman United job after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired.

His recent spell at Real Madrid as a coach led the club to three consecutive Champions League victories and three La Liga titles.

Rated as one of the best players in his generation, Zidane bagged 12 titles during his career with Italian side Juventus and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Zidane made 108 appearances for France, leading France to its first World Cup victory in 1998 and European Championship in 2000.
