US CONSUL GENERAL HOSTS RECEPTION TO HONOUR 17TH HEADIES AWARDS

The United States Consulate hosted an exclusive reception to honour the 17th Headies Awards at the Consular Residence on Modupe Alakija Crescent, Ikoyi, on Thursday.

 

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka expressed her excitement and pleasure that the Headies had returned to Lagos, reaffirming the city’s status as the entertainment hub of Nigeria. She reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to develop and elevate the creative industry. She also emphasised the state’s role in facilitating the return of the prestigious award ceremony to its home base.

On his part, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., expressed his appreciation to the Lagos State Government for its continuous support of the creative sector. He highlighted the collaboration between the U.S. firms and the Nigerian music industry, acknowledging the global recognition of Nigerian artists such as Burna Boy and Tems.

 

The Ambassador also commended the founder of the Headies, Mr. Ayo Animasaun, for his resilience, dedication, and commitment to hosting the event annually. He spoke further on the ongoing collaborative efforts between the U.S. and Nigeria to support musical development, including initiatives that have provided training opportunities for young Nigerian creatives in the United States.

 

In his remarks, Mr. Ayo Animasaun expressed profound gratitude to the Lagos State Government and other key sponsors, stating that their support made it possible to host the Headies Awards successfully.

 

The event featured high-energy performances from various musical acts, including Beriola and Joel Brown. A major highlight of the evening was popular businessman and Cubana Chief Priest, who performed his new track for the first time alongside Joel Brown.

 

Dignitaries in attendance included the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Olanrewaju Bajulaiye; renowned actor. Femi Adebayo, and other key stakeholders in the Nigerian music industry.
