Abdullahi Yamma, Professor of Public Policy Analysis at the Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) has advocated value based leadership as the only solution in tackling a plethora of challenges in Nigeria.
Yamma, a senior lecturer in the department of Political Science made the advocacy while delivering the university’s 57th Inaugural lecture in Keffi local government area of the state on Thursday.
Our Correspondent reports that the topic of the lecture is “Value-based leadership styles: Modelling and theorizing the dynamics of Nigeria”.
According to him, Nigeria as a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country has faced many challenges such as marginalization, ethnic and religious crisis, corruption and so on and only Value-based leadership offers a credible path in tackling these challenges.
“However, Value-based leadership styles success depends on institutional reforms, political will, and active citizens engagement,” he said.
He listed servant, transformational and ethical leadership styles as some of the value based leadership styles Nigerian leaders can adopt in rebuilding public trust, strengthen institutions and create a stable foundation for sustainable development.
“The transition to value-based governance will not be easy but it is essential for unlocking Nigeria’s potential in the 21st century,” he said.

He added that leaders once chosen or elected are required to serve the general interest of the public and not just few people who they are related to or have connected with.
“Leaders should regard accountability as the beginning of political wisdom because they might be compelled to do it willingly or unwillingly, sooner or later, here or in the hereafter.
“Good governance can promote inclusion, ensuring that all citizens have a voice and opportunities for participation. Accountability, effective leadership and good governance can promote stability, reduce corruption and abuse of power.
“Therefore, by modelling leadership and theorizing good governance, Nigeria can promote development and social change, ultimately improving the lives of it’s citizens,” he said.
He then recommended that leaders must rule according to the oath of office taken while they are being sworn into office and be prudent in the management of financial and material resources and avoid corruption.
“Leaders must also exhibit exemplary character, either in or out of office and to ensure equitable distribution of amenities amongst all sections of the country. Followers must also exercise restraint on asking leaders for undue personal favours,” he added.
In her address, Prof. Sa’adatu Liman, Vice Chancellor, NSUK praised the lecturer for his efforts and urged other professors to indicate interest in delivering their inaugural lecture so as to be certified as full professors.
She then described the topic as relevant and apt, given the current state of leadership in Nigeria and hoped that it would provide insights and spur Nigerian politicians into offering effective leadership at all levels. END
