European football governing body, UEFA, has opened an investigation into Italian Serie A giants Juventus for a possible breach of its club licensing and financial fair play regulations, multiple reports have confirmed.
Reuters on Thursday reported that prosecutors in Italy have summoned Juventus itself, the club’s former chairman Andrea Agnelli and 11 others to stand trial over allegations of false accounting.
The club is believed to have partially declared financial loss for the past three seasons. Financial losses for 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons are said to have been understated.
BBC Sport reported that UEFA are looking into the possible fraud on money spent on players’ transfers between clubs. Also, salaries that were sacrificed during the COVID-19 pandemic as stated by Juventus are thought to have broken the FFP regulations.
The latest development is one of the ill-fates that have befallen Juventus after being caught up in several financial scandals in recent months which played part in the decision by the club’s entire board members to resign from their positions.
On Tuesday, Spain’s La Liga released a statement renewing its call for “immediate sports sanctions” to be placed on Juventus.
