Some senators have issued an ultimatum to President Muhammadu Buhari, giving the former military leader six weeks to address multiple security breaches in the country or face impeachment.

On Tuesday, the Minority Leader of the Senate, Phillip Aduda, disclosed the ultimatum to press after a mass walkout by his colleagues.

Mr Aduda disclosed that the opposition senators had issued a six-week ultimatum to Mr Buhari to tackle the multiple security challenges in the country.

They agreed to commence the impeachment proceedings against the president should he fail to address the insecurity within the period given by the lawmakers.

During the plenary, Mr Aduda had raised a point of order asking the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, to discuss the security situation in the country and the impeachment of Mr Buhari.

The motion was dismissed by Mr Lawan, leading to a walkout of the legislators from all the political parties outside the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This action at the Senate comes a day after Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase, revealed that the State Security Service shared 44 intelligence reports ahead of the attack on Kuje Prisons.

The attack on the Medium Security Custodial Centre saw the release of Khalid al-Barnawi, the Ansaru leader behind the bombing of UN Headquarters in Abuja in 2011, as well as 878 other prisoners. Out of the escapees, about 64 prisoners had terrorism-related charges levelled against them. Boko Haram/ISWAP had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Insurgent groups like Boko Haram and its cells have wreaked havoc across the nation, with multiple attacks circling the country’s capital.

Mr Buhari has not been spared from any action, as bandits attacked his convoy on his way to Katsina, his home state.

On Sunday, terrorists responsible for the Abuja-Kaduna train attack released a video threatening to kidnap Mr Buhari and the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

These attacks come amid the outgoing Buhari-led administration’s constant reassurances that security challenges and costs of living concerns will be addressed.
