The President Muhammadu Buhari who has been recognised lately for his activeness at the tail end of his administration has departed Abuja on Tuesday April 25, 2023 to attend the third Extraordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) to discuss strategies for strengthening peace and security in the fight against maritime-related crimes.
This was disclosed by his media aide, Mr Femi Adesina, the summit was called by President Nana Akuffo-Ado of Ghana while the president is expected to participate in a high-level discussion on strategies for strengthening peace and security in the fight against maritime-related crimes in the gulf.
It was also gathered that President Buhari was not alone but accompanied on this trip were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, the National Security Adviser, retired Maj.-Gen Babagana Monguno, and the Director-General, National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ahmed Abubakar.
However, it was noted that, President Buhari has been recognised as a leading advocate of collective efforts by member-states of the Economic Community of Central African States, the ECOWAS, the GGC, and their partners to address and prevent piracy.
Recalling that in June 2019, Nigeria’s National Assembly passed the Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offences Act, 2019, which was aimed to prevent and suppress piracy, armed robbery, and other unlawful acts against ships.
