What led to the dismissal of 800 workers at the Dangote Refinery? According to insiders, the catalyst was reportedly a WhatsApp group that was allegedly used to disclose confidential information about refinery operations.
Members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) allegedly reached out to refinery workers, encouraging them to become part of the union with assurances of support and security. To facilitate this effort, a WhatsApp group was established for sharing forms and posting daily updates on refinery operations.

Management considered the group to be a violation of trust. Insiders revealed that the content being shared included confidential operational information. Executives regarded this behavior as disruptive.“Reports from the refinery were being shared daily. Management saw it as a serious threat and acted quickly,” source said.
