Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The atmosphere at Obio Cottage Hospital, Rumuobiakani, was filled with smiles and gratitude as the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi hosted a heartfelt health outreach program for antenatal and nursing mothers in the community. The event, which focused on maternal and child health, delivered more than just medical supplies—it brought hope and reassurance to women navigating one of the most important journeys of their lives.
A Day of Learning and Giving
The day kicked off with an engaging talk on disease prevention and maternal health, led by seasoned medical professionals. Expectant and nursing mothers listened attentively as experts shared practical tips on prenatal care, hygiene, and ways to prevent common ailments affecting mothers and newborns.
Questions flew from the audience, covering topics from diet during pregnancy to malaria prevention. “It was such an enlightening session,” said one participant. “I’ve learned things I didn’t even think were important for my baby’s health.”
Gifts That Keep Giving
After the talk, the Rotary Club handed out delivery kits to over 20 expectant and nursing mothers. The kits, packed with essentials like gloves, sanitary items, and diapers, are aimed at ensuring safer deliveries and healthier newborns.
The club didn’t stop there. Mosquito nets were distributed to help combat malaria, one of the leading causes of maternal and child mortality in the region. Thermometers, methylated spirit, and other hygiene essentials were also gifted, along with a donation of critical medications to the hospital pharmacy.
“It’s not just about the items but the thoughtfulness behind them,” said one recipient, holding her new mosquito net. “These are things that will make a big difference in our lives.”
Leadership with Heart
At the helm of this impactful initiative was Rtn. Chima Ibekwe, PhD, President of the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi. Addressing the mothers, he emphasized the club’s dedication to supporting women and children. “Maternal and child health is one of Rotary’s key areas of focus,” he said. “We’re here to ensure you feel supported, safe, and empowered during this important stage of your life.”
The event also featured PAG Dr. Raymond Nge, a respected medical professional, who lent his expertise and underscored the value of community-based health programs.
Gratitude from the Community
The gratitude from the community was palpable. “The mosquito net will protect me and my baby, and the thermometer will help me keep track of our health,” one mother said with a beaming smile.
The hospital staff were equally appreciative of the Rotary Club’s support. “These donations will enhance the care we provide to our patients,” a nurse remarked.
A Legacy of Care
This outreach is part of a larger commitment by the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi to improve healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities. With a strong focus on Rotary International’s global priorities, the club is bridging healthcare gaps one initiative at a time.
As the mothers left the hospital that day, delivery kits in hand and heads full of new knowledge, the impact of the Rotary Club’s efforts was clear. It wasn’t just about the donations—it was about the reassurance, the support, and the promise of a brighter, healthier future.
For the Rotary Club of Rumuomasi, it was a day well spent, creating magic in the lives of those they serve
