...as Speaker Says Bills Will Enhance Security, Emergency Response, Commends Sponsors
The Rivers State House of Assembly today held its regular sitting at the Hallowed Chambers, Admin Block, Government House, Port Harcourt, which was presided by the Speaker, Rt Hon Victor Oko-Jumbo.
Amongst items on the schedule for business of the day was debate on the Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill 2024, presented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Orubienimigha Timothy, and the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill 2024, presented by the Leader of the House, Hon Sokari Goodboy Sokari, which was followed by second and third readings on the floor of the Assembly before both bills were passed into law.
In his remark, the Speaker commended the sponsors, citing the Transport Bill’s potential to tackle “one chance” issues through commercial vehicle profiling, enhancing security, revenue, and service delivery. He praised the Emergency Management Bill as timely, domesticating NEMA’s efforts to address natural disasters, fires, accidents, and emergencies in the state.
Recall that public hearings had been held for both bills where stakeholders and the public made relevant inputs leading to the outcome of what was presented in today’s plenary.
Thereafter the House adjourned sitting to Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
