The Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde in tonight Statewide broadcast has addressed the ongoing strike by workers in Oyo State. He has directed civil servants to return to their duty posts on Monday and assured them that their two months’ worth of deductions will be paid along with their August salary. Additionally, the government is open to further dialogue with labor unions to protect the rights of workers.

Governor Makinde urged union leaders to come back to the negotiating table to discuss possible salary increases and pension harmonization. He acknowledged the protests and blockage of entry points into the Secretariat, emphasizing that his administration has prioritized workers’ welfare since taking office in 2019. The government has consistently paid salaries and pensions on time, including the minimum wage and adjustments for all civil servants.

However, due to the current financial constraints, the governor explained that it may not be feasible to implement further increases in salaries or pensions. Nevertheless, he announced that the cooperatives deduction would be paid alongside August salaries. To alleviate transportation burdens for workers, the government will also increase the number of buses available for commuting from 9 to 12, covering more routes.

Furthermore, Governor Makinde revealed that the government will cover the health insurance premium for all pensioners under the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) scheme. Any pensioner who has already made payment will be refunded. The monthly payment of gratuities to pensioners will also resume to address the backlog inherited by the current administration.
