The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate cases of recurring collapse of the national electricity grid.
The resolution to embark on the probe followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Sani Bala, a lawmaker from Kano State.
In the motion, Bala said the national grid has collapsed over 100 times since the privatization of the electricity sector in 2013.
He lamented that the grid has collapsed about eight times this year alone, blaming the frequent collapse on a lack of framework or spinning reserve.
Bala noted that it is “incomprehensible that all the key power plants in the country, including Egbin, Utorogu, Chevron Oredo, Oben gas-fired power plants, Ughelli, and Chevron Escravos power plants could all shut down at once.”
Consequently, the House resolved that the committee on power should conduct the investigation and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
