Portugal has released requirements for its new “digital nomad visa,” which will launch on October 30. Under the new visa regime, remote workers who make at least $2,750 a month can apply to live and work in Portugal for one year or residency and stay longer.

The programme will allow recipients to travel visa-free throughout the Schengen Area, a region containing 26 European Union member countries where travellers can move freely without dealing with border control.

Applications can be made at a Portuguese consulate in the applicant’s home country or at Portugal’s immigration agency, Servio de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras.

Proof of income for the last three months is required, and applicants must submit tax residency documents and a contract of employment (or evidence of self-employment).

Other European countries, like Spain and Italy, have similar digital nomad visa schemes in the works. The income bracket falls between €2,500 and €3,000 per month, according to Insider.

In Hungary, the digital nomad visa has a slightly lower monthly income threshold of €2,000 and allows visa-free travel through the Schengen area.

Malta’s remote work visa pegs applicant’s minimum monthly income at €2,700, or $2,630, but they are entirely exempt from any local income taxes, making it one of the most tax-friendly digital nomad visas.
