The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called on Nigerians to remain calm following reports of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and concerns over possible retaliatory actions against South African nationals and businesses in Nigeria.

The Force said security and intelligence agencies reviewed the situation during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held under the chairmanship of the National Security Adviser, to assess its security implications and determine appropriate response measures.

The Police assured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm, noting that the Federal Government is engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to ensure a peaceful resolution and safeguard the interests of Nigerians both at home and abroad.

While acknowledging public concerns over the reported attacks, the Force warned against any form of reprisal attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, or hate speech, stressing that such actions are unlawful and will be met with the full force of the law.

The statement emphasized that all persons lawfully residing in Nigeria, regardless of nationality, are entitled to protection under the law.

It added that any attempt to target South African nationals, diplomatic missions, businesses, or other lawful interests in the country would be treated as a criminal offence.

The Police also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified or inflammatory information, particularly on social media, warning that false or provocative content could heighten tensions and undermine diplomatic efforts.

According to the Force, enhanced security measures and increased surveillance have been deployed around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other strategic locations to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public peace, and preserving national security, while encouraging citizens to remain vigilant and continue their lawful activities without fear.
