Ahead of the 2023 elections, the federal government has ordered the closure of all universities in Nigeria from 22nd February till 14th March, 2023.
This order came from the Federal Government to the National University Commission (NUC) which acted based on the content in a circular issued by Deputy Executive secretary? Dr. Chris Mayaki through NUC to all Vice chancellors of various universities insisting that all universities should be shut down effect from 22nd February to 14th March, 2023 until after the elections.
The National University Commission noted that the directives was from the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.
It reads: “As Vice chancellor of all universities and Director/Chief executive of inter University centers are quite aware the 2023 general elections have been s scheduled to hold on 25th February 2023, for the presidential and National Assembly, and Saturday 1st March for gubernatorial and state assembly respectively.
“In view of the foregoing and concerns expressed on the security of staffs, students abd properties of our respective institutions, the Honourable Minister of Education, Mal. Adamu Adamu has following extensive consultations with the relevant security agencies, directed that all universities and inter-university centres be shut down and academic activities be suspended between 22nd February and 14th March respectively.
