The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said it is monitoring the epidemiological trends to guide the requests for planned vaccination campaigns, as the centre notes that no fewer than 701 suspected cases of cholera and 19 deaths have been reported so far in 2022.
This was contained the cholera situation report published by the centre on Monday.
It read, “Twelve states have reported suspected cholera cases in 2022. They are Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Rivers, Taraba and Zamfara.
“As of February 27, 2022, a total of 701 suspected cases, including 19 deaths, have been reported from 12 states in 2022. Of the suspected cases since the beginning of the year, children less than five years are the most affected.
“Of the suspected cases since the beginning of the year, 47 per cent are males while 53 per cent are females. States namely; Taraba, Cross River, Borno, Bayelsa and Adamawa account for 82 per cent of all the cumulative cases. Ten local government areas across six states namely; Borno, Cross River, Taraba, Bayelsa, Kwara and Rivers have reported more than 10 cases each this year.”
“Response is being coordinated by the national multi-sectoral Technical Working Group hosted at the NCDC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Federal Ministry of Environment, and other partners.
“A National Rapid Response Team with response commodities was deployed to support the ongoing outbreak response in Taraba State.
As regards vaccination, the NCDC said it was an epidemiological trend that was being monitored to guide the International Coordinating Group request for planned vaccination campaign.”
