Nigeria and Angola have taken a significant step to deepen bilateral ties by signing a “Visa Waiver Agreement” for holders of Diplomatic and Official/Service Passports.

The agreement was formally signed on Sunday, February 15, 2026, on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Under the deal, citizens of both countries carrying diplomatic or official passports will no longer require visas to enter the other nation for official duties, short visits, or transit—facilitating smoother diplomatic engagements, government-to-government cooperation, and high-level exchanges.

The signing ceremony reflects ongoing efforts by both nations to strengthen political, economic, and cultural relations within the framework of the African Union and Agenda 2063.

It is expected to ease administrative hurdles for diplomats, senior officials, and delegations traveling between Abuja and Luanda.

The agreement comes amid Nigeria’s active participation at the AU Summit, where Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Stakeholders have welcomed the move as a practical boost to intra-African mobility and mutual trust.

This latest bilateral pact adds to a growing list of visa liberalization agreements Nigeria has pursued across the continent to promote integration and people-to-people ties.
