The US Department of State is set to slash the number of American embassies and consulates in Africa authorized to handle visa applications for people wanting to enter the United States.
According to report, nearly 50 diplomatic posts currently processing these applications will be consolidated into just 20 central hubs in the coming weeks, according to three US officials and an internal document obtained by The Associated Press.

Although the State Department declined to comment on the specifics of the memo, it told PBS that it continuously reviews its global operations to use taxpayer money as efficiently and effectively as possible in support of America’s priorities.

This includes keeping a visa system with strict security screening and vetting standards while matching resources and capacity to US national interests.
