As the 8th edition of the National Youth Games officially declared opened on Thursday, Lagos state athletes are optimistic of a podium finish as the event unfolds across the various sports.
The youngsters, who stole the show with their beautiful white apparel at the Matchpast of the opening ceremony heralding 2024 NYG at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State, expressed their determination to showcase their talents and make the state proud.
They also expressed their excitement with the opportunity to represent Lagos at the national championship for athletes who are below 15 years of age.
Chidera Nwokedi, who is competing in Judo, said it is a privilege for her to represent Lagos while declaring her readiness to face any opponent in her weight category. The 10-year-old exudes confidence that with the training and different techniques in her repertoire, she’s fully prepared to finish on the podium.
Budding athletics star, Blessing Egbowon, who specialised in Shotput, stressed that it’s a joyful moment for her to be among the athletes representing Lagos and her presence in Asaba is to set records and win gold medals. “I want to work harder, push forward and be the best I can”, she said.
On his part, Muhammad Uthman, a Cricketer stated that Team Lagos has been working and training from dawn to dusk for the NYG and the opportunity to represent Lagos at the developmental championship meant so much to him and the cricket team who are sure of claiming gold in the event.
Oluwadarasimi Bolade, another Judo athlete said, “I feel so happy and honoured to be part of the athletes representing Lagos at the 2024 National Youth Games”.
Bolade pointed out that every athlete has in mind whatever they are aiming for, but her target is to hone skills in martial arts and make the state proud by winning a gold medal.
270 Athletes are competing in 34 individual and team sports events.
