The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) hosted a special Food and Nutrition Day programme, tagged “Ounje Lo Re Awo”, at the Isheri Skill Acquisition Centre on Thursday.

 

This impactful initiative is a Multisectoral approach and part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to improving the health, well-being, and overall quality of life for women, children, and vulnerable populations across the state.

The programme was designed to raise awareness about the importance of nutrition in daily living, promote healthy dietary practices, and provide direct support through food demonstrations, nutritional education, and the distribution of essential food items such as whole chicken, beans, rice, garri, vegetables, vegetable oil, eggs and salt.

 

Speaking at the event, Honourable Commissioner of WAPA, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada emphasised the crucial role nutrition plays in poverty alleviation, especially among low-income households and disadvantaged communities.

 

“We cannot address poverty without tackling malnutrition. With programmes like ‘Ounje Lo Re Awo’, we empower women with knowledge, resources, and practical tools to make better food choices and lead healthier lives. Today’s programme is not just about food – it is about dignity, inclusion, and hope for a brighter future,” she said.

On her part, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, stated the importance of good eating habits and encouraged women to take care of themselves and their families. “It is said that when you empower women, you have empowered a nation”, she added.

There were 250 Participants at the event, which included community women from Ketu, Ikeja, Kosofe, caregivers, and youth from vulnerable backgrounds. They engaged in interactive sessions on balanced diets, child feeding practices, and food budgeting strategies.

Mr. Olusola Malomo, a nutritionist and dietitian, also offered counselling and demonstrations, while beneficiaries received food support packages tailored to nutritional needs.

The Ministry remains dedicated to creating sustainable platforms for empowerment through skills training, advocacy, and humanitarian outreach. “Ounje Lo Re Awo” further reinforces the government’s resolve to build a healthier and more resilient society.
