LETTER OF URGENT PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

We write to formally bring to your esteemed attention the disturbing reports making the rounds that certain traditional rulers, their trusted representatives, delegates, or subjects in some villages and communities within Aniocha North have allegedly been collecting money from Fulani herdsmen in exchange for granting them express permission to conduct open grazing in designated areas.

While we acknowledge that the Nigerian Constitution grants all citizens the right to reside in any part of the country, we are deeply concerned about the devastating consequences of open grazing. The uncontrolled movement of cattle through farmlands has led to widespread destruction of crops and severe economic hardship for indigenous farmers.

Beyond economic losses, there have been numerous reports of security threats linked to some Fulani herdsmen, including cases of violent attacks, kidnappings, sexual assaults, injuries, and even mass killings under the guise of reprisal attacks. These incidents have instilled fear and insecurity in our communities, making it imperative to take decisive action to safeguard lives and property.

In light of these concerns, we urgently appeal to all traditional rulers in Aniocha North to take immediate steps to peacefully but effectively expel all herdsmen from the 18 villages and communities within Aniocha North within the next fourteen (14) days.

Furthermore, for the sake of long-term peace and security, we strongly recommend and insist that, henceforth, no village or community in Aniocha North should, under any circumstance, welcome, accommodate, or permit open grazing within its jurisdiction.

We trust in your wisdom, leadership, and commitment to the protection of our people and their livelihoods. We urge you to act swiftly and decisively in the best interest of peace, security, and communal harmony.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours in National Service,

Ekene Nezra
