The Lagos State Government has said that the partially collapsed building on Oloto Street, Borno Way, Ebutte Metta, had been marked for demolition before the collapse incident, having been captured as distressed.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide made this known on Thursday during his inspection of the old two-floor structure that partially collapsed in the early hours of Thursday.

The Commissioner, who sympathised with those affected by the collapse, said that the building was part of those recently detected and captured as distressed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) during its routine monitoring of the built environment earlier in the month.

He said the Agency had served statutory notices, including quit notice and seal order, and initiated the process to effect its removal. “However, it is disheartening that occupants of the building refused to heed the notice issued by LASBCA to avert danger”, the Commissioner added.

Dr. Olumide has, however, directed LASBCA to immediately bring down the building completely while urging Lagosians to always heed government notices and vacate any distressed building to protect lives and property.
