The Lagos State Government has said it would develop long-term solutions to tackle the increasing pressure on water supply and sanitation in the state.

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission, Mrs Funke Adepoju, disclosed this on Wednesday during the 2022 Lagos International Water Conference.

Adepoju explained that the state would continue to prioritise developmental strides in ensuring improved water supply through rehabilitation and upgrade of existing major waterworks.

She said, “Urban population growth is increasingly putting pressure on urban water supply. It also means wastewater treatment plants must treat an increasing volume of wastewater, sewage collection, and treatment systems in creating liveable cities.

“Without proper sanitation, sewerage, and clean water supply, there is no liveable city. Placing water, therefore, at the core of the city’s urban planning and investments creates a strong foundation for sustainable growth. It increases the chances of developing long-term solutions, which successfully integrate the role of water with the needs of both local citizens and nature.”

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, said the two-day conference themed, ‘Unlocking investments and sustainable access to clean water and sanitation services,’ would strengthen conversations around investment in the water sector, as well as facilitate interactions with experts.
