In a resounding triumph of skill, teamwork, and commitment to a shared vision, the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has emerged as the champion of the Y2023 Nigeria Global Goal World Cup.

The two-day football festival, marking the maiden edition of this event in Nigeria, took place at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.

 

United by a common goal of advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, the tournament brought together teams from diverse sectors, showcasing the universal appeal and transformative power of sports in promoting social development.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, who applauded the resilience of the team at the competition, explained that the victory serves as a testament to the dedication of the SDGs Office in championing the cause of Global Goal World Cup in the State.

 

While emphasising the significance of the initiative to advance Sustainable Development Goals at all levels, Dr. Finnih remarked that the State Government is expanding collaborative efforts to harness the connections forged to amplify our impact and drive sustained progress towards the SDGs.

Her words, “The Nigeria Global Goal World Cup stands as a landmark event in the journey towards sustainable development, highlighting the importance of collective effort and collaboration in achieving the global goals”.

 

Acknowledging the support of the Lagos State Volunteer Corp in heralding the team to victory, the Special Adviser disclosed that beyond what the team achieved on the pitch, the office showcased the spirit of exceptional sportsmanship in advancing the Greater Lagos Ambition.

 

“As one of the major criteria of success, our team was able to amplify the call for action on Goal 17 “Partnership for the Goals” and create local impact. The crowd was there to support us with our unique style of playing the beautiful game of football“, she added.

 

She appreciated all participating teams for their dedication to the cause of sustainable development, urging them to continue to inspire action towards achieving the SDGs in Nigeria and beyond.

 

Dr. Oreoluwa maintained that the success of this inaugural edition paves the way for future editions, fostering a tradition of friendly competition, mutual respect and a shared commitment to creating a better and more sustainable world.

 

Over 16 women teams from various organisations including Non-Governmental organisations, Civil Society Groups, Government MDAs, and Corporate Entities among others participated at the inaugural showpiece.

 

Having emerged the Champions in Nigeria, the SDGs team will represent the country at the Finals in Saudi Arabia in January, 2024.
