Lagos State and Ogun State Governments have set up a working committee to tackle flooding and oversee proper water extraction in the border towns of both states.
The Special Adviser to the Governor of Ogun State on the Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
Oresanya said the committee became necessary to ensure that water extradition from Lagos State Water Corporation in Adiyan, Ogun State, does not negatively affect communities around the area.
He said, “In the spirit of the existing Ogun and Lagos Joint Commission aimed at enhancing the development of both states, the government of the two states have set up a working committee that will see to the proper water extraction and flood management in the border towns of the two states.
“The committee will also ensure that people do not encroach along the Right of Way which has already been conceded by Ogun State to LSWC in Adiyan for production of fresh water with the corporation improving on its corporate social responsibility to various communities around the area.
“The committee will equally plan for a joint dredging of Ogun-River and its tributaries by the Ministries of Environment of both states from both ends to prevent flooding in communities near the river.”
The Director of Production, LSWC, Mr Agiri Mustapha, said the two states have a lot in common and assure communities in and around Adiyan where the Lagos State water works is situated of more harmonious relationship and pledged the commitment of Lagos State to the dredging of Ogun River to prevent flooding.
