
The Federal High Court in Abuja has found Mahmud Usman, a leader of Ansaru, guilty and has sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
Usman had pleaded guilty to the unauthorized extraction of Californium minerals, and the profits from his actions were utilized to acquire weapons and ammunition.

Considering the guilty plea, the federal government requested that the convict receive the maximum punishment of life imprisonment. Additionally, they sought to have him detained by the Department of State Service due to 31 other pending charges against him.
The attorney representing Usman requested the court to show leniency, highlighting that the accused has no prior offenses.
Judge Emeka Nwite imposed a 15-year prison sentence on Usman and instructed that he be held in the DSS’s custody.
