The revamped UEFA Champions League phase ended on Matchday 8, as all 36 clubs stormed the pitch at the same time across 18 matches on Tuesday night, January 28, 2026.
All fixtures kicked off simultaneously at 9 p.m. WAT, creating an unprecedented, wall-to-wall football spectacle with qualification, playoff, and elimination spots undecided until the final minutes.
The historic scheduling ensured competitive fairness, preventing teams from gaining tactical advantage from earlier results, while delivering nonstop drama across Europe.
Under the new Swiss-model format introduced this season, each club played eight matches against different opponents. The top eight teams qualify automatically for the Round of 16, teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout playoff, while the bottom 12 teams are eliminated from the competition.

With everything still to play for heading into the final round, late goals and shock results unfolded across multiple venues, keeping fans glued to screens from start to finish.
UEFA described the new format as a major success, highlighting the competitive balance and excitement it brought to Europe’s premier club competition.
The league phase, which began in September 2025, has now concluded, setting the stage for the knockout rounds.
