It says, as part of efforts to strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s operational capabilities, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, led a high-powered delegation to San Diego, California, for a Programme Management Review Meeting on the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters. The strategic engagement, held from 9–13 June 2025, involved key representatives from the US Government and Messrs Bell Textron. The CAS expressed deep gratitude to the US for its strategic partnership, affirming the NAF’s commitment to a seamless and expedited procurement and integration process that will greatly enhance combat effectiveness and mission readiness.

The visit also took the CAS to Camp Pendleton, where he interacted with the United States Marine Corps’ HMLA-367 and MALS-39 Squadrons—both central to the AH-1Z platform’s operation and maintenance. He inspected the helicopters firsthand and discussed best practices in operation, sustainment, and logistical support with USMC officials. The engagement was a key knowledge-sharing opportunity, equipping the NAF with insights necessary for successful deployment and long-term support of the AH-1Z helicopters.
