Delta State Governor, Rt Hon Sherrif Oborevwori has again been commended for the 78billion Naira flyovers and road expansion projects in Warri and Effurun Metropolis awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, and other road maintenance works across the state, including the palliative repairs of federal road between Abraka-Ubiaruku axis by indigenous contractor, Obakpor Engineering Ltd.

 

The State Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr Bassey Udeme Eshiet, gave the commendation when he received the new Head of Delta State Orientation Bureau and Executive Assistant on Communication to the Governor, Dr. Latimore Oghenesivbe, who paid him a courtesy visit on Friday, 17th December, at the Corps State Administrative Headquarters in Asaba.

He expressed appreciation for the timely visit by the new head of the Bureau and his management team, and stressed the need for public awareness on the severe consequences and irreversible losses caused by road crashes, noting that governor Oborevwori’s recent 78 billion Naira contract awarded to construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, and the massive repairs of roads, citing the Trunk A road of Abraka-Ubiaruku axis which would reduce crashes and ease vehicular movements during the yuletide period and beyond.

 

Mr. Eshiet while speaking on the need for motorists to be safety cautious especially during this festive season, praised the foresight and visionary leadership of the state governor for the ongoing construction of three major flyovers, cloverleaf, and road expansion projects in Effurun and Warri metropolis, saying that the legacy projects embarked upon by governor Oborevwori will drastically reduce the regular traffic jam at the Enerhen Junction to Marine gate, DSC Roundabout, Effurun Roundabout and PTI Junction, among other high traffic proned areas in the three senatorial districts, thereby saving lives and ease of transportation of goods and services in the state.

 

He was pleased with the call to partner with Delta state Orientation Bureau led by Dr. Oghenesivbe in the area of increased sensitization on road safety, adding that the visit clearly revealed that the new helmsman of the State Orientation Bureau had proactively keyed into governor Oborevwori’s vision to save lives on our roads under the MORE agenda of this administration.

 

Earlier, the head of the Bureau cum Executive Assistant on Orientation and Communication to the Governor, Barrister Latimore Oghenesivbe, appealed for partnership in view of the state governor’s call for reduced road accidents in the state, during the festive period and beyond.

 

He noted that speed violations, drunk-driving, driving without seatbelt fastened and making phone calls while driving are some of the frequent causes of road accidents which is why the State Bureau of Orientation is keen on partnering the state command of FRSC to curb the trend through regular sensitization and other awareness strategies.

 

He highlighted the Bureau’s mandate, emphasizing the need to instill a value reorientation in the general public, promoting the display of appropriate behavior as citizens of the state, stressing the importance of partnering with the FRSC as the yuletide season approaches and anticipated the surge in vehicular movements.

 

Dr. Oghenesivbe also pointed out the issue of alcohol and substance abuse among drivers, recognizing the urgent need to prioritize saving live, which is dear to the heart of the State Governor, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori.

 

Furthermore, the State Orientation Bureau helmsman emphasized the need to stop the selling of alcoholic drinks and distribution of drugs within public parks through regular sensitization of drivers and citizens about the dangers of substance use while driving, so as to mitigate road crashes during the forthcoming festive period and thereafter.

 

Oghenesivbe raised pertinent questions concerning the causes of road crashes and proposed strategies to minimize them, adding that the purpose of the visit was to establish a collaboration with the Sector Commander, so as to facilitate joint efforts, not only during the yuletide season but also for future initiatives, including forthcoming awareness campaigns.

 

He said the partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps will embark on road safety sensitization in major motor parks across the three senatorial districts, and through radio jingles, Tv Commercials, billboards, fliers, road walks, and safety talks in motor parks, while calling for the removal of drinking joints in motor parks where drivers get drunk before hitting the roads to their destinations.

 

Dr. Latimore Oghenesivbe, was accompanied on the visit by the State Director of Orientation and functioning Permanent Secretary, Comrade Mike Arinze, the Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr Ngozi Uwaje, Assistant Director of Orientation, Judith Emeka-Wemembu, Mr Omonigho Okotie, Assistant Chief Information Officer, among other members of staff of the Bureau.
