Free Fejiro Oliver: YNRO Condemns Continued Detention, Prosecution of Journalist, Socio-political Activist

The Coalition of Digital Press Association and Young Nigerian Rights Organization (YNRO), led by Comrade Victor Ojei (Wong Box Nigeria), condemns the continued detention and prosecution of journalist and Socio-political Activists Fejiro Oliver under the Cybercrime Act.

 

Fejiro faces charges over Facebook posts critical of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone, a clear misuse of Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act to silence press freedom which contradicts the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended.

Nigerian Federal High Courts have consistently struck down these provisions:

• Okedara v. AGF (2018):* Section 24(1)(b) ruled unconstitutional.

 

• Sowore v. FGN (2019): Free speech and Political criticism upheld. Political criticism is protected speech.

 

• Media Rights Agenda v. Nigeria (2024): Government must protect, not persecute, journalists and Activists.

• SERAP v. FRN (ECOWAS Court, 2018): Criminalizing speech violates human rights. Criminalizing online criticism is illegal.
