The Federal Government has shut down a medical laboratory which allegedly produced an inaccurate DNA.
The decision to clamp down on the laboratory was taken when the result was sent back to Nigeria from Saudi Arabia.
The government also said it had given medical laboratories in the country 2025 deadline within which they should register with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria or be shut down.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of MLSCN, Dr. Tosan Irabor, disclosed these in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja on Friday on the side-lines of a press conference addressed by the Registrar/Secretary-General of the West African Post Graduate College of Medical Laboratory Science, Dr. Godswill Okara.
He however did not disclose the name of the laboratory concerned.
Irabor was responding to a question from The PUNCH on why many marriages have broken down because of inaccurate DNA results.
He said, “When such happens, the best thing is to report to the MLSCN with the result issued to you by that laboratory which gave you AA or AS. Nigeria is evolving, the issue of health litigation is just coming up.
“I got a call about a month ago about a laboratory in Nigeria that has this (DNA) problem. They sent it back from Saudi Arabia to confirm. And what did I do? We closed the laboratory. It is not registered with Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.
“We don’t know the quality of the personnel that are working in that facility. That laboratory is not recognised in Nigeria. So, people should patronise recognised laboratories.
