Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have suspended their two-week old industrial action.

The FCT chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers had embarked on a five-day warning strike on November 18 over the non-payment of their salary arrears among others.

However, the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello. on the same day met with the FCT Chairman of the NUT, Stephen Knabayi, promising to pay all the promotion benefit arrears of the teachers before the end of the year.

The teachers however proceeded on an indefinite strike at the expiration of their warning strike to press home their demands after the area council chairmen refused to reach out to them.

Speaking to our correspondent on Wednesday, the Secretary of the FCT chapter of the union, Margaret Jethro, said the decision to suspend the strike was reached at an emergency meeting on Tuesday.

She said, “We have decided to suspend the strike after an emergency meeting of the Executive Council of the FCT wing.

“This is in view of the commitment of the area council chairmen to implement the 2019 and 2020 promotion in November salary.”
