FAMSAS Public health department to host 2025 public health week

Arrangements are on top gear by the Public Health Department of FAMSAS College of Health Science and Technology Keffi, Nasarawa state to host it’s second annual public health week on Wednesday, 19th March, 2025.

Comrade Adakere Orashi Mohammed, Head of Department of Public Health of the College confirmed the development to our correspondent in Keffi on Tuesday.

He described the theme of the 2025 Public Health Week “Emerging deseases of public health concern” adding that the event will be held at the college’s premises.

Mohammed explained that the event which is organized annually by the department is aimed at creating awareness to the college academic students as well as the general public on the preventive measures regarding their health status in line with the adage that says “prevention is better than cure”.

He said ” The importance of the event is to amplify our academic students here and the outside world. I believe most people don’t know what is public health and it’s role in the society.

“So it is an avenue to create that awareness to them so that they can priorities more on preventive measures and make sure they provide solutions to their health issues and that is why we have lineup of activities that will showcase the difference between who is a public health worker and the general public just as the popular adage that says ‘prevention is cheaper than cure,” he said.

Speaking further on the lineup of activities to mark the day, Mohammed explained that there would be lectures presentation by some health professionals like professor Amoga Gideon who will be talking on enhancing public health through effective disease surveillance system.

He added that Professor Akyala Ishaku, a director with Nasarawa state University Keffi who will present his own lecture on the topic ‘Strengthening Public Health System for Effective Diseases Outbreak, Strategies, Challenges and Innovations.

According to him there would also be a debate presentation between Pharmacy students and public health students of FAMSAS and thereafter with their counterparts from the state college of health science and technology in Keffi amongst others; all targeted at creating awareness on health related issues to the outside world.

He then used the medium and called on the students and the general public to come out in their numbers either to participate or listen carefully to the events that would be unfolded to be health educated generally at the end.
