Manchester United are now one point adrift of the top four with a game in hand following an emphatic 3-0 victory over Super Eagles duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis’s Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Marcus Rasshord put United ahead inside the first 20 minutes of the encounter to score his 10th goal for the Red Devils this season across all competitions before Anthony Martial doubled the lead barely three minutes later.
The visitors found the back of the net towards the end of the first half but was ruled out by VAR for offside after referee Anthony Tailor initially awarded it.
Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey pulled off some incredible saves in the early minutes of the second half after the first-half error leading to Martial’s goal.
Hennessey saved Antony’s left-footed shot from close range in the 56th minute before denying Martial a chance for a brace four minutes later. He also denied substitute Alejandro Garnacho’s attempt on goal only two minutes into his introduction.
United goalkeeper David De Gea was called to action in the 70th minute but pulled off an impressive save to stop Sam Surridge’s back-flick effort from finding the back of the net.
Substitute Fred sealed the victory for the Red Devils with his 87th-minute strike after he was found by his fellow Brazil national team teammate Casemiro as Manchester United clinched the maximum three points at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are now just one point adrift of Tottenham, currently occupying the last spot in the top four, with United playing one game less.
