For the second time in three days, Manchester City have defeated Chelsea, this time handing The Blues a 4-0 thrashing at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening.
Chelsea are now out of the Emirates FA Cup while City advance to the next round.
After the 1-0 loss to city in the league on Wednesday, The Blues were hoping to find a decent result in today’s FA Cup tie to turn their woeful situation around but after more than 90 minutes of play, the result further added salt to Chelsea’s open wound.
Riyad Mahrez put City upfront in the opening minutes of the game from a well-placed free-kick that was deflected into the net by Conor Callagher before Julian Alvarez doubled the lead from the spot kick just on the half hour mark.
In the 38th minute, Phil Foden slotted the ball into the back of the net to hand City a massive 3-0 halftime advantage in the third round tie.
Mahrez almost secured his brace in the 73rd minute of the encounter but his curler from a few yards outside the 18-yard area narrowly missed its target.
Meanwhile, Chelsea made some dangerous runs in the right flank of the pitch but inexperienced teenager Omari Hutchinson failed to provide The Blues front line with cutting edges.
In the closing minutes of the game, Mahrez finally got his brace from the second penalty awarded to City in the match following a foul on Foden by Kalidou Koulibaly to secure the emphatic victory for the reigning Premier League champions.
Manchester City will now face the winner of the third round fixture between Oxford United and Arsenal in the next round, while Manchester United were drawn against Reading for a fourth round tie.
