….40% Pay Raise, End 16-Year Impasse
In an effort to improve the welfare of university Lecturers and foster industrial harmony in the education sector, the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) providing for a 40 per cent salary increase and enhanced allowances, following 16 years of prolonged negotiations.
The 40 per cent review is to be implemented through a Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and will cover expenses related to journal publications, conference attendance, internet services, learned society membership, and book allowances.

The agreement also includes the provision of essential tools required to support effective teaching and research, strengthen postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, and examination moderation.
The sealing of this agreement will bring an end to incessant university shutdowns as a result of acrimony between university teachers and the federal government. It will therefore ensure fidelity of the academic calendar of universities, restore stability to the system, and improve productivity and global competitiveness of the universities.
