In a shocking twist ahead of the much-anticipated Rivers State Local Government Chairman election scheduled for October 5, 2024, the Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn from providing security, leaving the entire election hanging in uncertainty. This dramatic decision follows two explosive rulings by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which have thrown the election process into complete disarray.

On July 19, 2024, the Federal High Court issued a restraining order barring the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies from playing any role in the Local Government Election. As if that wasn’t enough, the court doubled down with a second ruling on September 30, reiterating that security agencies were to steer clear of the polls. The Nigeria Police Force, faced with mounting legal pressure, has opted to comply—effectively abandoning their role in safeguarding one of the state’s most crucial elections.

This decision comes as a blow to public confidence. Residents are now questioning how security will be maintained during the election, with an opposition party already in the streets, protesting vehemently for the enforcement of the court’s orders. The party is warning that any attempt to defy the law could lead to a serious confrontation, sparking fears of potential chaos on election day.

The Nigeria Police Force, however, claims it will still ensure law and order, vowing not to “stand idly by in the face of potential disturbances.” But with no formal involvement in election security, critics argue that such promises ring hollow. The Force has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to comply strictly with the latest court order—signaling an alarming vacuum in the traditional election security framework.

This unprecedented situation has left Rivers State residents on edge. With no police officers, no tactical teams, and a seemingly disorganized security plan, many are left wondering: who will protect the voters? The Nigeria Police Force has urged citizens to remain calm, but as tension builds, the question remains—can peace truly be guaranteed?

The statement, signed by SP. Grace Iringe-Koko, Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, has left everyone in shock and uncertainty, with election day just around the corner. As the October 5 election looms, one thing is clear: Rivers State may be headed into one of its most turbulent and unpredictable elections in recent history.
