The executive chairman of Oshimili North Local Government Council, Honourable Innocent Esewezie on Friday 22nd of November 2024 partnered with Support for Human Development Foundation (SHUDEF) in organizing a successful outreach on free blood sugar test/home based care services for people physically challenged by the impacts of diabetes in Igbuzo community of Delta State.
The programme which took place at Igbuzo Health Centre witnessed a turnout of persons who came to determine their blood sugar level, while others where diabetic patients who came to receive their home based care relief materials provided by the local government council.
Hon. Esewezie, who travelled out on official duty was represented by his wife Chief Mrs. Flora Esewezie.
In an opening remark, the executive director of Supports for Human Development Foundation (SHUDEF), Mr. Emmanuel Ogbogo highlighted on the dangers posed by the high incidence of diabetes to human lives. According to him the International Diabetes Federation IDF, has declared that the world has 40 million people living with diabetes and that by 2040, the epidemic will be affecting 10 percent of humanity. He stated that in a recent survey conducted by Professor Olufemi Fasamade of College of Medicine, University of Lagos about 10 (Ten) million persons in Nigeria are currently living with it out of every 10 (Ten) adult in the urban area, about 2 persons have diabetes.
Mr. Emmanuel Ogbogo argued that the figures are grossly under estimated as many people who have diabetes have not come forward for test. Those who have diabetes do not know they have it because of its silent condition in the body that kills. If you don’t know that you have a medical condition that is ravaging you, you cannot treat it and remains a death sentence.
Mrs. Flora Esewezie in her address enumerated how dangerous the incidence of diabetes is to human existence. She advised the people to be careful of their lifestyles, and avoid eating food or taking sugary things that put one at risk, she advised people to regularly check their sugar status. She ended by presenting home based care needs and non sugary foods to patients that are most profoundly challenged by impacts of diabetes while some are visually impaired, amputees and others vulnerable.
It is remarked that Hon. Innocent Esewezie has one outstanding quality of having a deep heart for his people. This has been demonstrated overtime by his regular visits to hospital, paying hospital bills for those in dire need. To him humanity is one family and he believes in living people better than he met them.
“As doing great things for the lord begin with doing little things for man, we know that if Hon. Innocent Esewezie can remember to put food on the tables of the sick from his position as a local government chairman, then think what he will do while in a state or federal position.
The programme ended at 3:30pm with prayer for him by diabetic patients.
