The Canadian Senate has commended the achievements of Nigerian Afrobeats sensation and Grammy-award winner, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, as well as the flourishing Nollywood industry.
The Director General West And Central African Bureau Global Affairs Canada, Marcel Lebleu, hailed Burna Boy’s success as a touring artiste.
He praised the African giant for selling out the iconic Bell Centre in Montreal, becoming the first African musician to achieve this feat.
Lebleu said: “I don’t know if you know Burna Boy. He is an Afrobeats singer. He was in Montreal three weeks ago, sold out The Bell Centre twice. That’s about 35,000 people.
“He was also in Toronto. We don’t think about the culture industry a lot but this is an important industry. For example, Nollywood.”
The chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Peter Boehm, also said: “I was listening to Burna Boy the other night, I like his music.”
