Over one hundred and fifty school bags with writing materials were distributed to pupils and students in primary and secondary classes at the Special Needs School in Creek Road, Port Harcourt Town, as part of the club’s back-to-school project, under the Rotary International area of focus, supporting Basic Education and Literacy.

According to the National Policy on Special Education, the provision of quality education to all children with disabilities in Nigeria remains challenging due to poor resources, inequitable distribution of educational services, late identification of children with special needs, among others.

Following this development, President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan Rtn Gogo Charles said members of the club took action to rise up to the challenges of the Special Needs School.

“The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan adopted the Special school as our choice location to deliver our signature projects over the years. The club through her members and other partners have provided basic needs of the school and students and also established an equipped skills acquisition center for the special students. We have equipped their library with computers an gave them comfortable classrooms. Now we are here to lift some burdens off the parents by providing free writing materials and school bags to the pupils and students here. We will continue to create hope and tackle mental health with our projects”, he said.

On his part, supervising Assistant Governor, to the club, Oseme Okoruwa while commissioning the project said “This is our literacy project and also our community development project as part of the business of Rotary. The basic thing that inspired this is the need to care for the neglected, the less privileged and the need to make life better for them.”

Principal of the Special needs School, Creek road, Town, while commending the members of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan, said “The club has been in the business of making education for the special Needs students accessible and easy for even the teachers by providing basic necessities for the school.
