The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been dealt an injury setback at the ongoing AFCON 2025, with striker Cyriel Dessers ruled out for the rest of the tournament after sustaining a thigh injury.
The 29-year-old forward has returned to his club, Panathinaikos of Greece, for further medical treatment. Dessers earned his first call-up to a major international tournament but did not feature in any of Nigeria’s group-stage matches, as the Super Eagles finished top of Group C unbeaten.
Despite the setback, head coach Eric Chelle remains confident in his squad, with Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman expected to spearhead Nigeria’s attack in Monday’s Round of 16 clash against Mozambique at the Fez Stadium.

Although there are minor injury concerns within the camp, the team’s core remains intact as Nigeria continues its push for a deep run in the competition.
Fans across the country have maintained strong support for the three-time African champions, calling for unity and focus as the knockout stage begins.
