Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has expressed pleasure with the decision of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend their strike.

A statement by the Lagos lawmaker said the decision is the right call as it allows students at public universities to resume their academic activities.

Gbajabiamila, however, added that the suspension of this strike does not mean the issues of funding, education standard, and student and staff welfare have been resolved.

He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari, Secretary to the Government Boss Mustapha, Minister of Education Adamu Adamu, Minister of Labour Chris Ngige, ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke and its leadership.

Gbajabiamila also hailed his colleagues in the House of Representatives for the decision to intervene in the negotiations with ASUU.

The Speaker said he was confident that the House will endeavour to ensure that the Federal Government keeps its commitments.

The Green Chamber leader lamented that the industrial action happened in the first place.

“It is even more unfortunate that it lasted as long as it did. We must make sure it never happens again.

“Our public universities should be citadels of learning and innovation, where young people discover themselves and reach for the stars.”

The Speaker urged the government, universities, unions, and citizens to begin a critical conversation about the future of public tertiary education.

He wished young Nigerian people Godspeed as they return to school and encouraged them not to allow the disruption to deter them from pursuing their ambitions and dreams.
